ASEAN-Japan Review Future Cooperation Direction

ASEAN and Japan reviewed their cooperation and its future direction, focusing on areas of mutual interest and concern across the three pillars of political-security, economic and socio-cultural cooperation during the 7th ASEAN-Japan Joint Cooperation Committee (AJJCC) Meeting held today at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta. The Meeting also discussed preparations for the forthcoming Post Ministerial Conference (PMC)+1 Session with Japan to be held on 9 August in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar. In addition, the Meeting exchanged views on developments in ASEAN and Japan.

The Meeting welcomed Japan’s continued commitment in supporting ASEAN Community-building and integration toward 2015 and beyond, including through the establishment of the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) 2.0 amounting to US$100 million following the closing of the original JAIF. The Meeting stressed the importance of ensuring the effective implementation of the ASEAN-Japan Plan of Action 2011-2015 and the Implementation Plan to Implement the Vision Statement on ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation adopted at the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit. The progress of implementation of the Plan of Action and the Implementation Plan will be submitted to the ASEAN-Japan Summit in November.

The Meeting was co-chaired by H.E. Kan Pharidh, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Cambodia to ASEAN and H.E. Koichi Aiboshi, Ambassador of Japan to ASEAN. The Permanent Representatives of ASEAN Member States to ASEAN, their representatives, officials from the Mission of Japan to ASEAN, and the ASEAN Secretariat also participated in the Meeting.
